Gild the
Margin

Giltrook does not write. We gild. The letter is cut first in leadpoint, then the ground is laid, then the leaf is breathed onto the surface and brushed flat with a badger. What shines back was not drawn — it was persuaded into light. The work is not read; it is held to the candle.

Leaves of Gold

Gesso & Bole

Before gold, there is chalk. The ground is raised in relief, smoothed with a cat's tooth, washed in red bole so the metal finds warmth underneath. Gold is not stuck to paper; it is seated on a bed made for it. Skip the bed and the leaf flakes before the feast day.

Breath & Burnish

The leaf is lifted on a cushion, cut with a gilder's knife, and dropped where the breath carries it. A agate dog-tooth follows, pressing the fragment until it forgets it was ever separate. Burnishing is not polishing — it is convincing gold to remember it is gold.

Initial & Vine

The big letter is a garden. From its bowl grows acanthus, from its stem a peacock, from its foot a chain of knots no one can untie. The text waits outside the frame; the ornament is the page. We do not decorate the book. The book decorates the ornament.
